Still More Roster Numbering Help Needed!
Posted by Morpar on Friday, August 6, 2004 1:33 AM
Thanks to all who responded to my earlier post. Now another question has reared it's ugly head.[%-)] Where can I find out what was made by Alco, EMD & GE and when it was produced? For example, how many SD45's did EMD build, when were they built, and how many were built? Surely there are sites that carrie that basic information for all the builder's locos, I just don't know where to look! [banghead][banghead][banghead] I'm afraid I'm really getting messed up on this whole numbering thing, but I can't help myself, I want more information! Thanks in advance.

Original and volume two of the diesel spotters guides if you can find them. Has all the info about each diesel model made. Top notch reference manuals.

Clinchvalley is right, however some of the second generation engines were still in production when the Second Diesel Spotter's Guide was printed (my copy says 1973). The next update of the book called The Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide pretty much closes out the second generation locomotives, first published in 1989. Appearently there was a guide book in between, but the Contemporary pretty much recovered the material. I believe there is a newer guide available, but I don't own a copy yet, and I'm not sure how much "history" is in it

One other idea would be a Google search. You never know what you might find on the internet.

MR ran a Motive Power Survey about 2-3 years ago?
Perhaps Andy S. can pop in here & find the back issue it was in?

There are several on line sites with the information you are looking for.

EMD built 1260 SD45s from 12/65 to 12/71.

The book "A Field Guide To Trains" has every locomotive from first generation up until the SD80 and it has all builders. It has dates built and how many were made.
