Steel flex-track info
Posted by aweinstock on Friday, July 30, 2004 11:59 AM
Hello all,
I have just discovered, to my great suprise, that my H-O model railroad, with most of the trackage at least 25 years old, consists mainly of steel, rather that nickel silver, flex track. The manufacturer is listed on the ties as " GT Italy." The track has never rusted and has only required minimal care. Does anyone have info on this stuff? It is magnetic so I doubt that it is "stainless" and I see that someone on ebay is selling brass track by that same manufacturer. I cannot find the manufacturer listed anywhere.
I am obviously not about to tear up and replace about 100 feet of track and therefore am very curious about what I have.
Regards,
AW

I had some of the N/S track with the "GT Italy" and I had purchased this from Model Power.

AW;

Half of the stainless steel alloys are magnetic. If it is not causing you problems, leave it at is.

I bought a couple of boxes of track at a garage sale that I used on a previous layout. The roadbed was the truscale wood roadbed and the rail that was included was steel. The track was hard to solder, but overall it ran pretty good. And the rust was very lifelike. In fact I still have a bundle of 99' of steel rail sitting in a box, that was never used.

Model Power sells that track made by GT of Italy as Nickel Silver, not stainless steel. If you check Trainland, they still sell Model Power flex track, and it is still made by GT of Italy. The rail is stiffer than Atlas flex track, and the crossties are smaller and more to scale than Atlas ties. I have used both and could tell no difference other than the crossties and rail stiffness.
