[:)]I have a SD40-2 that only runs backwards. I tried to repair
this and discovered that a spocket gear had worn down some
teeth and was only catching some at one angle (backwards ).
[?] My problem is that the manufacturer folded, I H C, and parts
are not available. I love this loco and do not feel it is ready for the
shelf yet. Would anyone have suggestions ???[?]
THANX.

Get a new Athearn RTR or a KATO SD-40-2 , bury the Mehano (IHC),and put the past behind you.
OR
you can buy a walnut display section to mount your old engine on - for the price of the IHC - and keep it as a momento.

Eastcoast,
Which gear is it?
Some of the gears, the worm, cluster gear and axle gears will interchange with the 4 axle IHC locos. Some of the idler gears are different. They will also interchange with the RSO built AHM, Model Power and Life/like locos. You may find a parts loco or the gear at a train show.

Try Northwest Shortline - NWSL. http://www.nwsl.com/ They have gears among other things.
Enjoy
