Mysterious PFE Ice Platform quest...
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 14, 2004 10:04 AM
There was a interesting problem that has bothered me for some time. I decided to post it here in case anyone else has run into this.

Most of the time I choose to start my story with "You wont believe what this [censored]"

But today here is my dilemna...

I saw on the recent MR Announcement (June 03) that there was a PFE Icing Platform assembled for such and such a price from Intermountain and Tichy Group.

I fired off a email to my local hobby shop who gladly took up the search, after several emails back and forth with needed items such as the item number and maker etc... followed by a follow up visit for paints, parts, etc and questions about the Platform in question...I hear this:

"There is no item by that number."
"There is nothing in the Intermountain's Papers regarding this item, sometimes they are releasing information later than to MR."
"I show nothing in the warehouse anywhere on that item from Intermountain or Tichy."

Undaunted I go home to scour the internet and came up blank. Nothing plus nothing = nothing.

So when the day is done I am back to the MR's product announcement regarding the PFE Ice Platform wondering if I had launched on one of those famous "Wild Goose Chases" or "Quest for the golden egg" that sometimes takes years or decades to complete usually by other means.

I do have one platform serving 4 40' reefers. I am trying to get this new and fancy platform into my second track to serve at least 2 more 40' reefers.

So I am stumped on my quest. Any ideas?

Lee,

It is my understanding that this is a built up version of the Tichy kit that has been around for the last 10 years or so. You could buy the kit and build it rather than waiting for the assembled version. Walthers makes a passable version in kit form as well. There are also several articles on revamping these kits to be even more realistic that have come out over the last few years in the hobby press. The PFE book that is out has lots of photos of various icing stations that could be a good scratchbuilding project.

Yup; the Intermountain icing platform is really the Tichy kit built up (how lazy can you get?!?!?!)

For some reason, Walthers doesn't list this Tichy kit any more, but Tichy does still sell it. Go to their website and order direct (they've got two lengths)
