Motive Power Descision

I am currently looking to buy a GP38-2 to accompany my Atlas GP38-2. Has anybody heard of any reviews of the Proto 2000 or Athearns GP38-2[tup] [tdn]. Any info is welcomed!

Why not another Atlas unit.[?] DC or DCC, it's a no brainer that they will run best together if they are of the same manufacturer.
I dont know about the P2K unit (havn't looked at them since the FA's were released, the 1st time![:(!]) but I bet the Athearn unit will draw more current, make more noise, and not be as detailed as the Atlas piece.

Hey Heartland Flyer,

I believe you currently have an Atlas GP-38 not a GP-38-2. Atlas hasn't made a GP-38-2 that I am aware of. kbfcsme is right, you will be better off obtaining another Atlas GP-38 unit (for performance reasons) and modifying it to be a GP-38-2 (assuming you have the time, patience, and skills to do so).

I look forward to reading the reviews of the Proto and Athearn units myself.

Modular railroading at its best!
If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!

I have an Athearn GP60 (Same chassis as the GP38-2 according to the instruction sheet). It's a good loco - one of my best Athearns in fact. Quiet, smooth, decent paintwork (Mine's in the EMD Demonstrator livery, which looks really good on this loco). What all Blue Box locos should be, in other words: Cheap, dependable motive power that runs well, hauls decent loads, and looks good too.
