Best bet, in my opinion, if it is possible, try to keep the cats out of the layout room. One cat that we have, Scooter, isn't interested in my trains at all. The other cat, Chessie, (should of seen it coming when we named her!!!) can't control herself!! I currently don't have a layout, but whenever I am trying to put a kit together she has to be in the middle of it. I put her in another room now to keep her away from the adhesive and parts--for her safety and my sanity!! P.S. Currently house hunting--looking for layout space with living quarters attached!
