Just received the Walthers Christmas Catalog listing the Rivarossi 2-8-8-2 Mallet for $319.98 & the 4-6-6-4 Challenger for $289.98. Those past

Charles: I have a old AHM NKP 2-8-4 that I lettered for 765(doesn't run).I have given thought in buying a new one and lettering 765 for operation on my furture layout or ran from time to time at the club(once we find a building to set up our module layout) I know Rivaroosi came out with a improved drive.What is this drive like?

For the kind of $money you may spend you are entitled to the best answer and I can't give that to you. After 18 months my Mallet failed. The most authoritative Rivarossi source I know is John Patton of Myersdale Pa [e-mail] E-Mail him I tell him Chuck of Grand Rapids referred you.

Larry, I specialize in Rivarossi repairs and such on the new drive and old as long as parts are avalable. You have an older AHM/Rivarossi Berkshire? 2-8-4? You can e-mail me at [e-mail] and give me the specifics on it. I will ask you a few questions on it so I know one i'm dealing with. I however have the older generation motors in stock. The ones that are in the cab. And can be seen. If you have any questions please contact me! I believe if your 2-8-4 is the older version I can get him up and running in no time. I'm always around! Not here in Trains.com but over at Trainboard.com I am. I stop in once a day sometimes more. On your Y6b, I have a thought on it to make it run only thing is that would be different is the wheels or if you might be able to get the same type ones it has from Walthers. I would sugest IHC and give them a call on the old wheels from the older one. Only thing is the fact of the wheels themself! You would have to settle for the longer flange that the old one had. This is where your troubles were on yours. The oils used in it attacked the plastic spokes and ate it away from the axle. which made the press fit and hole out of round and true. Thats why it runs as roght as it does.

Another thing you could do is keep an eye out on ebay for a parts wagon of the older one! For some odd reason the older one had different plastic used for the spokes and such and is not so tempermental to oils as the newer plastic is on the newer Y6b. I have been looking for a set of Rivarossi Commonwealth 3 axle, 6 wheeled trucks to fit to a Rivarossi Vanderbuilt tender that I have. Anyone here have any in their junk box or know where I might be able to get ahold on a set? I've been working on a bunch of Y6b's that were trashed, lost tender, a few loco missing parts and so on. Nothing though to harm its running reliablilities though So I'm building them into B&O EL-5's (2-8-8-0's). What fun the art of customization is!

It would be a way to make fellow model railroaders who own Rivarossi stuff smart and how to maintain their loco's forsure... However being their are alot of older AHM/Rivarossi loco's out their I have thought of writting a Maintenance/Repair book to sell.... I'm just not motivated on it yet... But it was a thought! I have the all the parts sheets to every Rivarossi American and European loco they made in a book that lists all parts and a price. One day I might get motivated enough to get to putting that on paper...
