Tower 55 Locomotives How are They
Posted by willjayna on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 12:16 PM

I am debating on purchasing a Tower 55 loco and repainting to a Norfolk Southern. I currently have a DC system and I am used to running Athearn, Bachmann, Atlas and Kato. How Tower 55 locomotives compare to these others. I do understand that Tower 55 is second to none in detail but I do not know how these operate on a DC system and if they would be finicky in consists with my other locos.

I am just curious.  Where did you find one to buy?   All the places that I knew carried them are out of stock.

I found the loco listed on Craig's list and I was curious if these locos run well on DC. I need to let him know by this evening if I am going to purchase.

Anyone know how these locos will run on DC?

I have two Tower 55 models that came with Digitrax SoundFX decoders in them and even though I run only DCC, I believe that they would run on DC; however, you're not going to benefit from having a sound decoder by using DC power.

The models were made by Samghonsa of Korea and are very smooth runners and highly detailed.

Athearn bought the rights to the Tower 55 models and will be releasing their versions some time in 2010, hopefully with SoundTraxx Tsunami decoders, and maybe ones without decoders for straight DC operation.
