I remember YEARS ago a friend of mine got a good deal on a Spectrum Pacific that had been a return to a hobby shop. Someone had kept trying to put smoke fluid in the stack - but it had to smoke unit.

So, he got a good deal on a nice engine - that was all oily. I cleaned it up for him. Worked fine.

I thought that the smoke units were on the cheaper engines (read: Bachmann) because the toy-train crowd that goes for cheaper engines wants the smoke effect.

Conversely, the more expensive units (Spectrum) don't have the smoke units because the modelers more interested in realism know that there is no way a smoke unit can scale down the smoke you see from a real steam engine.

The above is NOT my opinion - just something I read years ago.

Personally, I don't think the smoke looks right - there's not enough. If there WAS enough, the layout room would be filled in no time!

Rob
