You can find every name ever used on the Internet if you look around. I found it once, but don't remember where it was -- a U.S. Government agency, I believe -- maybe the Trademark and Patent Office. Someone had them posted on their private Web site, too. I have the list printed out, but don't have it on disk any more or I could e-mail it to you.

I just typed "Railroad names" into Google and it came up with a site that is compiling them, as well as model railroad names -- give that a try.

Where did you find the listing for model railroad names (I was snowed under by the plethora of other links/references that Google pulled up)

Depending on how small you're looking there's the Trans-Kentucky Transportation Inc. (TTI)
This is a shortline sub of CSX through central/eastern KY.

Fort Wayne & Wabash Valley
Chicago & Milwaukee Electric (taken over in 1926 by...)
Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee (yes, it was a freight hauler, too)
Illinois Terminal (interurban, later dieselized freight)
Fox Lake & Western (interurban from Waukegan, IL to Fox Lake, IL, defunct in 1920s)
Chicago South Shore & South Bend (commuter/freight)

I haven't read ahead to see if these were already covered.

You should get the Locomotive Rosters & News books for James W. Kerr. It lists al the rail lines across the US. I'd give a guess about 400+ railroads.
