To Paul the CB&Q Guy

To Paul or anyone else that would know the answer to the following questions:

1) Is the CB&Q's "Old Joe Main" the West Quincy to St. Joseph line?

2) Is the Q's K Line the Burlington to St. Louis line, aka the Hannibal Division? I'm ASSuming[:D] that "K Line stands for Keokuk Line if I'm right.

About the only section of track's nickname on the Q I know of right now is the Triple Track East End, so I hope I'm correct on these two.

Thanks in advance,
Christopher

Go and join the above group on Yahoo if you are not already and ask the question. This group is an unofficial spin off of the Burlington Route histirical society. Lots of very knowledgable experts here.

Ha! Like Batman and Robin...

Actually, I'm sorry but I don't know the answer to your questions. Hopefully someone else does. I thought I saw where you joined the CB&Q List on Yahoo. They certainly would know.

I picked "The CB&Q Guy" handle a few years back when I first got online since back then I seemed to be the only one interested in the Burlington. I figured it would be easier for people to remember who I was. Unfortunately, it doesn't mean I'm an expert on the railroad. In fact, you seem to be more knowledgable than me because, I think, you're researching an exact area that actually existed. I'm proto-freelancing so I just take what I need for my era and general area I'm modeling, and tend not to pay too much attention or remember other pieces of information I read.

I'm impressed that at your age you have chosen to model steam in, what was it, 1938? The reason I say this is because, in general, they say people seem to model what they saw when they were kids. Steam was gone even before I came along...especially in Chicago where I grew up. At 14 I think I was just finding out about cab control and trying to understand how to wire a control panel, and understand it all.

Finally, at one point when I found out your whole name, I was going to ask if your Dad's name was Dale as over 15 years ago I used to work with a guy in this area with the same last name as yours, who had a son named Chris. I've lost touch with him and thought maybe he moved and that possibly you were his son. I don't remember what his wife's name was. Then I got to thinking about it, and realized his son Chris would be almost ten years older than you now!

You're a decade off-I model 1948. I guess I don't model what I saw when I was about 6-7 or what I see today because I have never really liked the KCS or any of the mega-mergers. Really, I don't have any good family ties to the Q or Wabash, I did have a few relatives that worked for the Chicago & Alton, GM&O, and Illinois Central Gulf, as well as BN, I may have had a few distant relatives that worked for the Q, but no real ties to either line I model. Initially I was thinking about modeling the Rock Island in the same time frame, but I had absolutely no ties with the Rock at all so I lost interest in the Rock pretty quick. I knew I wanted to model a railroad with a lot of influence in Illinois, that had a lot of steam well into the 1950's- that knocked the GM&O, to which I do have family ties, out of possibilty. Then I found out the CB&Q had plenty of steam in the era I model, as well as a large amount of trackage in my region. Thus, the idea of modeling the Q became more appealing to me. So that leaves us at the present.

BTW- I am a member of the Yahoo CB&Q group- I am burlingtonfan_89. And I have found it a little less exciting to model steam because I never have seen it in operation-sadly, I have never even seen an engine in CB&Q or Wabash paint. There is just something about how monotonous modern railroading, what I "should be modeling", that doesn't appeal to me. MR's associate editor wrote the "From The Editor" page in the June MR, and talks about why modern railroading doesn't appeal to him-my views are the same as his.

I have seen one piece of rolling stock that belonged to the Q-an old wooden handcar!
It may not be nearly as nice as an operational M-4A or even the road's only 2-8-8-2 (that would be neat to see!) but that's what models are for after all.
