Realizations & disappointments...
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 4:33 PM
So I just realized that the BLI E7A's in CB&Q paint I ordered (that should be here tomorrow) won't match the CZ cars at all! [:(] What horrible luck! So now what? Try to sell these E7's and wait for BLI to introduce matching CB&Q locos? Any thoughts? Will the E7's stick out like a sore thumb in a consist of stainless (or stainless looking...[;)]) cars?

CB&Q had alot of E-7s As a matter of fact they were delivered with Stainless Steel side panels to better Blend in with the E-5s. Also the California Zephyr was initially ran with F-3s on the CB&Q before switiching to the E-Units. I am sure that E-7s would have shown up on the CZ numburous times. Just because the E-8s got the press, doesn't mean they got all the assignments. Railroads assign an appropriet loco to head up a train, So go ahead, Run your E-7s on the CZ.

Don't open the package.

Call your vendor and ask about a return.

My experience has been, I eat the return shipping and a restocking fee that can
be 0 to 15%.

It doesn't hurt to ask.

Thats kind of my opinion as well, Chuck...
I am aggrivated that I didn't put 2 and 2 together sooner to have canceled the order before it shipped, but I guess I'm a little peeved that BLI offered these without the plating (or whatever they do to them to make them look like stainless), them offer the CZ cars as plated...

Maybe I'll just get some CB&Q cars from Walthers and save some $$$...

Not all of the CB&Q E7s and E8s had stainless steel side panels. Some just had aluminum paint, like the rest of the unit. Check the photos of engs 9912A and 9941B on the Fallen Flags site.

Thanks fiverings, however, would a non-stainless unit pull the CZ? Do motive power people look at such a detail? I guess I'm asking because the NYC would have had to keep track of it's 20th Century hudsons vs. it's Empire State Express hudsons, right?

I guess in my world I can the CB&Q do whatever I want it to, and if that means pulling my version of the CZ with a non-stainless E7, so be it. I am just concerned that those units will look WAY out of place...

"These first E7's had a steeply slanted pilot like those of the E5's, including the doors and retractable couplers/buffers. The sides of the units were plain sheet metal, painted aluminum, instead of the fluted stainless steel of previous passenger units. The units' fuel tanks were painted black; everything else was aluminum. The first unit delivered with stainless steel side panels, after the E5's, was E9 9964.

None of the E7's were delivered with stainless steel side panels, but the following were retrofitted:
