Lookin for friends.
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 19, 2004 4:38 PM
Hi, I was wondering if there are any teenagers on this website that live in
the houston area? (And no I don't mean those who still feel like a teenager)
hahaha. I'm 19 by the way.
Thanks.

Not to be a preachy parent....

BUT

Looking for friends on the net is NOT a good idea. You have absolutely no way of knowing who someone is, if they are the age or sex that they claim, etc.

Since your login is Jesuspraiser18, I suggest you find your friends at church. [:)]

If you mean model railroaders, there are lots of nice folks at the Houston NCrowd club. I don't know for sure, but assume they have some teen age members

http://www.kingswayrc.com/ncrowd/2003/convention.html

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

okay, I am 43 and one who likes to feel like a teenager, but you know if my friend turns out to be female, I wouldn’t mind at all.[:D][:D]

I don't see any problems about searching for friends via this forum, especially if he/she has a church where we can build an major lay-out, I want to become a friend as well [:D]
Plus if you don't trust it, meet in a public place; ask a friend or parents to come along the first time. MR isn't really a sex forum then is it!?

I have positive experience of meeting fellow modellers from a Dutch site though.

Krgds
Cor

P.S. if someone in the Netherlands reads this and owns a church or other big building, please contact me. [:D][:o)]

Sound advice even if the rest of the thread is undeciferable [:p]

there is no problem seekingf riends this was as long as you follow the standards set by many online "meet people" places:

1) always meet in a public place (moderatly busy)
2) always take a friend with you (they don't have to sit with you, just near you where they can see you.)
3) never give the person your address
4) if possible, give them your cell phone number, if you wi***o meet again (home phones are easier to track an address to)

It is advisable to follow these basics until you are ptretty sure the person is relatively safe (you can never be 100% sure), 4-6 meetings is the norm. if they have a problem with these safeguards, i'd shy away from them. in this day and age, you have to protect yourself, not matter if you're male or female.

yeah.

You can almost never be too safe.
Especially on the net there are a lot of fakers and such lowlife so never meet alone or in your house.

It doesn't have to be. In fact, the people to watch out for will be looking on a more innocent site, where people wouldn't expect them.

In this case, the guy is 19 (or so he sez ;)), so it's less of a threat. That doesn't mean throw all caution to the wind, but it would be a different things altogether for say, a 14 yr-old.

We all just have to make sure that we use common sense about that sort of thing.

Actually that's not true anymore, they troll on almost any forum now. The police have become quite good at getting them on the traditional mediums they frequent, thus they move on try new areas that no one would suspect them.

It's better to play safe on every site than to think your safe on one such as this.

Wow, isn't it sad that these days you have to be soooo careful. Maybe if your church has a regional newspaper you could put a small ad in it seeking folk who are model railroaders. You never know how many there might be and you could start a MR Club. Go for it Jesuspraiser !
Geoff I wish I was better trained.

i'm in the Houston area..a 44 year old male...(former scoutmaster with the a boy scout troop in la porte i might add)..a devout christian...and would like to be friends via e-mail only..i'm not into meeting others ( i really don't have the time for it because I have such a busy schedule) but if you have any questions or want to correspond with me about model railroading then it would be ok...I've got about 25 years experience in the hobby and have a lot of knowledge about the hobby...and another one of the things i do know is that it's really not a good idea to meet others you don't know in R.T. especially from the internet...there are a lot of predators out there that would leap at the chance to do you harm if you let them...it's better if you don't chance it ... my e-mail is bayouman1@hotmail.com

I talk to another WSOR fan throught E-mail, just to talk and stuff. It can be fun to share ideas and/or bounce ideas off someone you know on a somewhat personal, or you could say on a first name basis.

As one who maintains a high school marching band site, I have to say that I totally agree with Roadtrp.

There are bad folks trolling around message boards and chat rooms. When ever I have to communicate with one of the band students regarding a band issue, I always include the principal and/or band director on the e-mail just to be wise.

Make sure your parents know what you are doing and who you are going to meet with if you find a teen to hook up with from this site.

Peace,

Sean

Ya, I gotta go with roadtrp on this one, and be very selective about what you put in your profile. Being forum friends is quite differant than being personal friends. I'm sure that most of these folks we meet on here are good decent people, but you never know who or what you're talking to, so be very careful. Keep it friendly but not personal. Never devulge information about yourself, unless you personally know the individual on the other end . Unfortunately, we are all strangers until we meet face to face.

I decided I'll stay with my friends at my church:

Check out the website.
This is not a link to it though.
Thanks anyway.

If you know them already, great! If you're using the Church newsletter to find them, i'd still follow the suggested rules, could even have the minister check them out before hand. freaks are everywhere and use all sorts of mediums. I hate to sounds so negitive, but it's not 1950 anymore where you can sleep with your doors unlocked and everyones friendly to each other.

Its alway a good idea to be carefull on the net. You could be chatting with me thinking I'm someone your age and religion, then find out I'm a 40 year old Born Again Pagan ! [:0]

Now wouldn't that be awkward! [8D]

   Have fun with your trains
