I feel like such a fruad.
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 3:06 PM
OK. Its been three weeks now, and I have had this project sitting on my bench. It is a Great Northern 50 Foot Plug Door Box Car. A relativly simple, spray, decal, and assemble job.

I can't seem to motivate my self to work on it. I have never had this problem before. I feel like I'm a total fruad all of a sudden.

Anyone have any suggestions? Is this temporary? Am I just stuck in a negative engergy spot for a moment? Somebody help me please.

Thank you,

A slightly bummed James

I suffer from the exact same feelings, and hanging out on these forums is addictive. What I've found is that once I do get moving again, I'm good for a while, and fall back into the old pattern. I seem to feed off the progress, but when there is little or none, it's hard to get moving again.

It's all good James! What you want to work on can depend on a lot. I have had the same siding that I need to put scenery on for umm oh i forget how long. Just do something else and when you get sick of that go to it.

Overall just do what gives you enjoyment!

James, James my boy,
Don't worry, we all get that way now and then. We can go like crazy one day, with tremendous progress being made and then suddenly become a slug overnight. That's the great thing about a hobby....it's not like a job where if you become a slug, someone might notice and fire you. The model railroad hobby will always be there for you and taking a break from a project will probably result in renewed vigor later on.

My wife and I were looking at new homes and thinking of moving a couple of months ago and guess what, all work on my scenery was halted. How could I be motivated to add to my beautiful layout if it is to be torn up and sent to the side of the road? So, I turned my attention to my rolling stock...wherever I go, they will "follow". I tuned some cars and weathered some others.

As another poster suggested, do something else for a while...Like I always tell people, the great thing about this hobby is that if you don't feel like assembling a building or a piece of rolling stock, there's scenery, detailing, tuning, etc. And, it doesn't matter what you're doing because it is all done on OUR TERMS and at OUR PACE and it all feels good. Heck, sometimes I just spend time organizing my tools and going through my "hobby store". It's fun to look at all those "toys" sitting in my closet. Right now I'm enjoying responding to your inquiry and that's okay...tomorrow I'll get back to some airbrushing I want to do.

Relax and enjoy this great hobby!

Nothing's wrong with you, guy. [;)]

We all go through this. Part of your feeling seems to be that you feel that you have to "tackle that project". When you start putting yourself under pressure, feeling that you're not a good modeler because of slow progress, you're going to be temporarily turned off. It's happened so many times to me. Took me 20 years to figure that out!

I've been posting about my FP45 and Metroliner projects. I haven't touched them since I stripped the Metro's 2 weeks ago. Just been too busy and at other times I wanted to sit, relax and not touch a thing! I don't feel guilty as I know that if I'm not in the mood, I'll wind up with [B)] Train Wrecks! If all goes well, I'll be working on them again this weekend. [^]

Relax and walk away from your project. Keep living your life and whenever you get a chance, glance through the magazines, go railfanning, or read through these threads. You have to remember that you're in this for fun! [:p][:p][:o)][8)][8D][:D]

GUILT is like a BIG anchor wrapped around your neck. Totally useless!

Smile, unwrap it and throw it overboard. Once you find yourself feeling more relaxed, you'll get into the mood. Remember:, don't work on models because you feel obligated, work on them because you enjoy making something that will satisfy you and sharpen your creativity! Can't get any simpler than that!

Well, it's good to know that you're another good, typical model railroader!
Keep your chin up, Amigo. You're O.K! [:D][8D][8)][:o)][C):-)][tup]

Does anyone remember the cartoon adventures of Underdog?? Always after a round with the bad guys, this super hero was whipped. He kept his "super energy pill" in his ring, but often needed help to get it and take it.

Maybe we model railroaders could borrow from this concept, no I don't mean drugs. Motivation!!!! For each of us it may be something different. This topic sounds familiar.

Ok, this last bit of funny is just what I think I need. For the record. I did set the car front and center on my workbench last night, and I stared at it until there was a big pool of drool to wipe up. I think I will crack open the airbru***his afternoon.

Thanks for your help.

A little more perkyer James today.

P.S. I also bought a Big Boy and a Hudson last night. Maybe that is contributing to my good humor as well.

Don't feel that bad. It took me about four years to lay track. It gets too cold in the garage during the winter ... on the other hand, it also gets too hot in the summer.

LOL that sounds just like here. That's also why, when I get to build my first layout, it will be indoor (for me the garage counts as being outdoor), most probably the basement or a shelf layout in the living room.

So I am not the only modeler building in a garage! I'd do a basement if I HAD one, but I live in a split-foyer house (kids still at home) and have no other options.

I've been procrastinating building my layout, but at least I DID get all of the benchwork erected so nobody will be parking any cars in there anytime soon (possession is 95% of ownership <lol>)!

That didn't stop my parents. My layout was set up in the garage, and when they decided to use it for something else, the unbolted everything, moved it to a storage unit, and there it sets. I didn't even have a chance to finish rewiring it for DCC. Oh well. I will be getting my own place this summer, More room, more track, more trains. With luck, maybe I can get a girlfriend and get her into trains to.

James,
Whatever you do, don't try to get a girlfriend into trains. Let her do her "thing" and you do yours. I was married to my first wife for 20 years and tried to get her into everything I got into. Could you imagine the poor woman going to a Stamp Show (you know, like a train show, but instead of trains, they're selling little pieces of sticky paper with pictures of presidents and the like on them). Well, as I said, she was my FIRST WIFE and complained for 20 years that I "smothered" her and wanted her to do everything with me. Guess what? My second wife, who is into sewing and has not been dragged into trains, is a lot happier doing her own thing. Sure, we do plenty together, but again, we have our own hobbies. We've now been married for 10 years and it looks like we could go on for a long, long time with me in the train room and her in the sewing room. Too much togetherness is worse than none at all.

Hope I've set you straight and that you manage to find a great woman and have a long and unsmothering relationship.

Regards,
Mondo

Nonsense!

Take a break. You've probably a bad case of cabin fever. Get outside, connect with your surroundings. Find your favorite hiding spot...meditate...come home and see if you don't feel differently. Still not ready? Don't push it. Could be that your creative energy needs more time to re-charge. [:)]

I think everyone is missing the real problem; thats the only project you have right now and you have the fear of what will you do after that is finished. so tear down the entire project and start a whole new one. mucho projects ahead yeah

A recent tally of modeling projects I have on tap that I can actually track, numbered well over 800. So its not what will I do. Its just one of those "Dang it!, Why don't I ever want to do this thing!!!!"

I think some projects are just destined to be workbench queens.
