So the initials FT stand for the two horsepower levels that EMC intended. And remember, at the time all builders sold locomotives, not units. With the FTs you could not separate the A from the B easily as they were connected with a solid drawbar. In fact many roads numbered all four units of an FT with the same number and added a letter to keep track of each unit.
