Baldwin 'Sharks' (RF -16 diesels)
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 12:22 PM
I'm starting to detail two sets of ABA "sharks' and am seeking info on detail parts (specific or very close) to upgrade these units, especially correct truck sideframes since Model Power and ER Models use Alco FA sideframes. What has been your experience with operating characteristics of these w/ original motor/drive? (these models will represent 'generic' hand-me-down units not necessarily prototypically specific to original buyer) Thanks.

Bill
Try this on for size,[:D]

Both pages show lots of photos of the D&H sharks, the last of the breed.[V]
I'm currently superdetailing an old Alco models brass shark, my hope is to find anothe brass A unit cheap so I can repower and detail it also in the D&H scheme. I've looked at the ER model, and while it looks ok, it feels really "toyish" no real heft to it.

hey kbfcsfme - thanks for leads to both sites; good close up shots of D&H units and info on where they went after they were bumped off the D&H filled in some blanks for me. Were any Baldwin units (not necessarily just 'sharks') ever repowered w/ EMD or other engines?

I saw the D&H Sharks when they were on the Michigan Northern back around 1980.Pretty sure the EJ&E re-engined a Baldwin center cab with a pair of EMD engines.

Bill; I've seen photots of some the Baby Face Baldwins that were re-engined to EMD specs. In all cases, they had exagerated humps on the roof that reflected the nature of what was inside. In addition, many were also re-trucked with EMD or Alco trucks. Interesting re-works. There were also some Alco DL-109's re-done to EMD spec, same roof humps. Still good looking diesels.
