I consider staging to be essential, in all but the largest of railroad empires, allowing you to model 'the rest of the network'. this allows you to store trains offscene so you can add a bit of variety to the stock running around the layout. Heres a link to the 'fiddle yards' on my OO British outline North Eastern Railway layout.
