Building my first layout

Is this just a track plan, or is it a complete kit? If it is a plan, then you should look at the space you have available, and decide how to best use the layout room. Go with whatever theme interests you, and be creative. I have built several layouts over the years, and although I start out with a general idea of how it's going to be, I follow prototype practice and lay the track as it suits my vision of how it should be in that area. If you are getting into complicated benchwork, such as a mountainous terrain, then you do need advance planning, but for a typical midwestern "flat" type layout, just go with what looks right to you. Just remember, keep the curves to a reasonable radius in connection with the type of equipment you'll be running, and try to keep all trackwork within reach for cleaning, and heavens forbid, derailment cleanup.
Decide what type of scene(s) you want to model, and let your memories and/or imagination dictate how the tracks and structures and scenery will be laid out.
I hope you find this advice helpful.
Todd C.
