Is there anyone around Toronto that would be willing, for a price, to air bru***he body of my Athearn AC4400 for me?
No decaling, just spray paint the body CPR red.

Thanks

Gordon

Gee Gordon, if you could fnd the right shade of red, and were careful you could use a spray can. I did some Athearn box cars and an engine that way many years ago with Krylon.

I was doing the old Minneapolis Northfield & Southern, and Krylon had a pretty close shade of blue. I think they have a few shades of red, including one called BANNER RED, which may be very acceptable.

Back then I met a guy who painted HO brass with Krylon paint. He was into UP, and liked the high gloss because it helped the decals go on smoother, and afterwards he would just go over the piece with a dulling spray.

The twist was, that he didn't use the can to do the spraying. He would stand the can upside down, and bleed off all the pressure, and then take a can opener to the bottom, and pour the paint into an airbrush jar.

The quality of paint in spray cans isn't really the issue, its the quality of the spray that many modelers don't like. I would argue that with reasonable care, and given the nature of the paint, that a quality job can be done even with the can!!![:O][8D]

I have read (no experience with this - yet) that Testors and other "model" spray paint has a finer grind tot he pigments, which results in a better coat than "full size" spray paints. I intend to try this on an undecorated box car as soon as it gets warm enough to paint in the garage...

Try it yourself CP. I did a athearn gp38 for cn with a spray can and it turned out great for my first time. You can get the orange anywhere. Just clean the shell good and let it dry really good. If it dosen't turn out you can strip it and try again. rambo1....

A CPR AC4400 is red, not orange like most of the SD40-2's.

I'll continue my quest for the right colour of spray paint.

Thanks for the tips
