Genesis SD70/75 Disassembly

I have a pair of Athearn Genesis SD75s that I am unable to remove the shell from. I' afraid that if I get too gorilla with them that I will end up damaging the shells. I have the MR review of them but the artical is unclear on the disassembly. Does anyone out htere have any experience with these models?

My wife's cousin has a pair of BNSF units. Similar situation. Our local LHS rep told him that unfortunately, you have to be a "gentle muscleman!" (I wonder if Athearn tests things like this on their units!) I don't mean to sound cynical, but I'm sure if Athearn did catch a minor problem like this, they might not want to spend the extra money in making corrections to the casting molds.

[;)]One thing that may help, carefully slip one or more smooth metal nail files between the shell and the chassis. Gently work the shell up. The shell will come off, but be patient. If you get irritated, then walk away for a while, return later and try again. I've damaged some of my cars and locos in the past by becoming impatient.

After removing the shell check carefully to see where it is that the shell fits on the chassis the "tightes". Consider getting a flat file and filing off a small amount of the plastic from inside of the shell. Afterwards, apply a very thin lubricant gel along these points (not too much as you don't want the lubricant collecting dirt).

At least these are better than the athearn ac4400 and the dash 9's, they are almost impossible to get off!!
