OK everyone, Aggro is looking for work, he's young and the home life could use some improvment. Let's see if we can help with some useful practical advice.

Aggro - Are you in college right now? What type of work are you looking for? Do you have any special skills or training? I'm going to do my best to point you to college if you are not already going but let us know how we can help.

Sorry. I read the original post as meaning Aggro posted on a different forum than the MR General Discussion Forum.

I still would respect his privacy, but suspect there would be many people offering help if he had asked for it on this thread.

Thanks Roadtrp - It may be embarassing for him (and that is not my intention) but at least he'll know that people are concerned and are thinking about him. Besides, Aggro has posted many enjoyable topics and he is worthy of our support.

Aggro,

Did you know that out in your neck of the woods is a division of ABB that makes rail cars? You might want to look into a position as a Swing or Night Shift Quality Control Inspector(and you get to work on trains!). I used to hire QC Inspectors. For an entry level QC position you mainly need someone with a good attention to detail and a good head on their shoulders. You're a model railroader, you have the skills for an entry level Quality Control position. Additionally, large companies like ABB will help you pay for your education while you work there.

Give it a try and see how it goes.

aggro: if you get a chance, take a class or two at Sierra College (which I assume is the closest JC to you) or AR sometime--it's a good way to get your feet wet for the college thing. Take vocational classes if that's what you're into, or some academics to get your brain the workout it sounds like it needs.

While it would be a bit of a drive, if you're interested in railroading as a career, Sac City has a railroad operations program--heck, I'm considering taking a couple of those classes just to enhance my model-making!

Skip that "smart savage" crap, aggro. If you got good grades and were a TA, you're a smart man, period. If you liked being a teacher's assistant, and have experience taking care of kids anyhow, have you thought about teaching? There is always a huge demand for math and science teachers (and a glut of english and history teachers, btw) so give it a try. From what I know of high school teachers, not liking teenagers can be a downright plus. And there is a LOT of financial aid out there, especially if your grades were good--and special incentives for folks who want to go into teaching.

As someone who decided to wait a while after getting my bachelor's degree before going to grad school, 13 years ago, I know how easy it is to put off academic goals. But you certainly don't have to let it be a permanent thing.
