Who would buy Lionel HO operating accessories?

Lionel is coming out with some realistic HO operating cars. I'm just curious if any of you would care to put prototypical operating cars on your layout (log loaders, coal cars, pipes etc etc)?

Seems would add play value to your layout.

I'll take the plung here and say that I would not buy them for myself but might would for a younger preteen person. I have fond memories of my old Lionel operating cars and acessories from back in the 40's. I would contribute my decision here do to my age. I believe that those operating cars and such would bring a lot of joy to a young person and really fire up their imagination which I also believe is good and needed for young minds.

I would wan't some but only if they were realisitic. Eriediamond, just because we are young does not mean we don't know the difference between a good model and a bad one, realism wise. i am not trying to bash what you say or start a fight but I was a little offended by your post.

I'd buy them; I've already bought some of the Lionel and Tyco operating accessories of the 1960's. I've got an area of my HO layout reserved for operating accessories, including the Lionel dump car, Tyco dump car, Tyco culvert unloader, and Athearn coaling tower.

I would. I think they would be fun. Isn't that what the hobby is about?

Actually, I don't concider model railroading fun.

"Fun" is like riding a tilt-a-whirl, shooting a paintball gun, or driving go-carts. I associate fun with laughing, smiling, and my heart beating fast.

I get other positive emotions from modelling. Like pride, relaxation, pleasure, and "man, that looks incredible" (I don't know a word for that feeling).

I get alot of good feelings from my hobby, but "fun" isn't one of them. My [2c]

This depends on each person's definition of "fun". [;)]

Oklahoma train nut, First let offer my sincere apologies to you and anyone else I may have offended in my reply. I meant no disrespect to anyone, no matter what their age. I simply stated that I wouldn't buy them for myself. When I stated I would buy them for a preteen, I meant what I said about stimulating their imaginations. I'm in my 60's now and my wants and ideas have changed since I was your age, which I am sure yours will too as you get older. It has nothing to to with the quality of the product. Believe me, I have no problem with anyone purchasing or enjoying anything in this hobby. Thank you for your reply to me and giving me the opportunity to appologise to you. Please read my signature.

You don't consider model railroading fun?!?[%-)]Aggro, I'd check my pulse if I were you. If you're not having fun, something is definitely wrong![(-D]

Years ago a cousin gave me a Lionel HO "switchman coming out of the shanty" operating accessory. I have never taken it out of its box. But it might be fun as a gimmick (the building itself is not bad looking)
Unless they have changed the tooling -- the Athearn 40' coal hopper has "working" hopper doors down below. I think Athearn made an unloader of some kind
Revell had some operating accessories. There is a place for them if they do not make a scale layout toylike

I enjoy it and all, but this depends on your definition of the word "fun".

I think the preteen crowd mentioned was like for my 3 sons aged 5,4(almost) and 2 1/2.

Seeing things unloaded and loaded would make the MR come alive for them.

I would have to see these cars/ accessories and more importantly see the prices before deciding.

Anyone have a link to where these might be found?

This sort of animated stuff definitely falls closer to the toy-train end of things--I suppose that there might be ways to include animation on a more "mature" layout--things like operating mail-pouch catchers, animated loading/unloading of open-topped cars, etcetera, might have a role--the cheesy milk jugs popping out of the side of the milk car, on the other hand, and the wacky waving flagman, etcetera, maybe not.

In the realm of animation--has anyone considered making use of animation to simulate loading and unloading of modular shipping containers? It wouldn't be too hard to animate an HO scale crane, and use electromagnets (combined with metal in the containers) to simulate loading/unloading operations...just a thought.

I'd probably get that kind of Lionel accessory for my nephew's layout, though.

I think operating accessories can be fun. I plan to have an O27 Lionel toy train layout under my scale layout with all the operating stuff I can afford.
Enjoy

Would definetly have see the cars first. The key word is "realistic". I agree with JetRock and DT1967. Don't like to see [tdn] cheesy effects, however, believable animation is definetly desirable.

What comes to mind would be the powered street / automobiles that's currently manufactured by a Europeon (Herpa?) company. I would love to see an AMERICAN version of this.

If what Lionel has involves low speed realistic actuating with quality motors, on crisply detailed freight cars than I would go for it! But we have to see what it is that is being presented. I do hope it's not more "cheesy stuff".
