Virginian Caboose

I would like to find any pictures or information on the cabooses used by the Virginian Rwy during its early years. If you have any info I would appreciate it. [e-mail]

I suggest you look for a book called "The Virginian Railway Handbook" by Aubrey Wiley and Conley Wallace. It was published in 1989 by the authors as W-W Publications, 128 Hunting Lane, Goode, VA 24556. It includes photos and a dimensional diagram of the virginian's most common wooden caboose, class C-1, and has photos and information on other VGN cabooses as well. It also provides a lot of other information that would be useful to anyone interested in modeling the VGN and its equipment and structures.

On the subject of cabooses/Virginian, How about C&O ? Rivarossi is releasing the Alleghany soon,is
Model Railroader going to have plans/drawings/photos of the C&O cabooses appropriate for the Alleghany. Is there a kit bash,or scratchbuild article that hasn't been published yet? A steam powered train isn't complete without a caboose.

My response to ANDY was more in line with needling MR to publish info concurrent with the release of the 2-6-6-6.
I have two scratchbuilt wood cabooses ( C&O ) that I run with an H5, as a mainline wayfreight.
I will probably be able to kitbash steel cabins for the Alleghany. I took photos of an ex-C&O/Pere Markette caboose in Holland Mi., so have details to work from.

Went to the page for the steel caboose,looks like an excellent model!
Had a chance to one-on-one with Robert Hundman at the National Train show in St Louis, for about 45 minutes. Exceptional model builder and extremely interesting individual to converse with!
Also, not many people these days would recommend a Gloorcraft kit, I feel complimented!

Hi Pete.

Glad you found a couple of the links useful.

I have a C&O caboose in the works. A Northeast caboose they got from the WM in '65 or so. Should be interesting and I have all the parts.

Luckily Red Ball also plans on doing a VGN caboose too.

I have to get back to the C&O caboose, was distracted, doing a Western Pacific FT A-B, F7A, and scratchbuilding a WP caboose to go with it.
