I'm glad to see that Lupo threw the switch. For a while there, I thought this topic was heading down the wrong track. It had become serious, and hoplessly dull.[}:)][;)][:D]

A new feature, maybe? Will the fusion locos glow in the dark?

Oh dear, sorry Dave, I didn't mean to wake the dead.[swg] I ran across a similar Freudian slip in another topic and posted a link. This truely is a topic for the ages. The older ages.[:P]

I saw it at the NMRA convention in Seattle. It ran great. It was also messy as that steam and oil condenses. I suspect most will be bought as a novelty and rarely run. I'd like to get one but I already have enough shelf queens.

Probably like a Pennsy T-I with a verly elongated and cylindrical snout coming off the front end. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Not at all, everyone is alive and well, and having a good laugh. Sometimes it's fun to take a trip down memory lane. It was a current topic that jogged my memory.

Can you find the post where I inserted the link? A little game of hide and seek. Somebody read that post followed the link and posted here, and now we are back on page one for a couple of days.[swg]

So I guess the Horny engine might want to go for a ride in a gondola around the canals of Erie hoping to find a nice caboose to take home?

Tom

So, what I hear you saying is that you are looking for the horney engine to mate with your "cows", in order to produce more "calves". Maybe you should check the yellow pages for a Loco stud service.[;)]

I've Picked up all of my steamers (loco and tender) and can not tell which is the male and which is the female. Is this information in the Walthers catalog or do I have to buy a book from Kalmbach?

Have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Fergus, what's fusion power?

If this was a serious question (it's hard to tell on these boards) here goes:

Nuclear power as we know it is Fission, which is made when atoms split apart, releasing energy. These splitting atoms cause a chain reaction. If you can control this reaction you have a nuclear power plant, if you can't you have a nuclear bomb. This is very simple terms, but it'll give you the picture.

Fusion is when atoms are under such heat and pressure that they combine to form a heavier atom. This is what our sun and other stars do. They combine hydrogen to get helium. This, of course, creates an amazing amount of energy. If it can be harnessed it promises to be a clean, almost unlimited energy source. It's nowhere near being close to commercial use.

on the serious subject of the hornby live steam loco. you all seem to be under the impression that it is a weak loco and a "flop".
far from it it is perfectly capable loco that i have personally seen haul 13 carrages up a 2' incline. and far from being a flop it is sold out pretty much across england. i am reliable informed that there is a DCC decoder in the pipeline from another manufacturer as there IS enough power in dcc to cope with the boiler.
i dont have one because i cant afford £500 on a loco and i dont have dcc anyway and am not rebuilding my layout to cope with it. but if you look at it as it is intended it is an executive toy and not a serious model. i.e. great for a tabletop.

Sneer all you want guys, but the first production run Loco plus Controller etc was a sell out and received very good reviews.
The next run of individual locos is selling well too.
It's ideal for garden railways and utilising all the unused 00 stock on your layout. it's designed to run 10 standard UK size coaches on the flat which is more than most UK indoor layouts can handle anyway, due to space restrictions
Here-in lies the rub - it is 00 and not H0 and you can only run one loco at a time ( unless of course you have each track electrically isolated and run by its own controller ).
And if you guys over the pond want one, there's nothing to stop you buying a suitable step-up transformer to plug the UK voltage transformer into.

Well, I'm not sneering! I saw this engine run at the Hornby booth at last year's Chicago Hobby Expo, and it was really cool! Hopefully, someone will crank out the electronics to make this technology compatible with standard DC or DCC, 'cause that's the only way I'll be picking one up.

You could, of course, craete an entire layout based on these engines, with full standard block control. Several of these engines steaming, popppingand whistling around a layout; now THAT whould be steam modeling!

Don't you know? all the girl engines have a high pitch "Peep Peep"
while the boy engines have a low groan.,"toot toot"
either way they have a tender behind
Both go into the tunnel huffing & puffing
then they come out pulling boxcars
got the story from an old Boxcar Willie tape.

A word of caution on buying these sets. Do not buy from out of your country.
The British controllers do not work with North American power even with a step down transformer.
There is a Canadian Edition that is CSA approved; the American version is not CSA approved but is probably UL approved. (CSA wanted some extra doo-dads.)
I think there is a fourth version -- Continental Europe? -- as well.

Nobody's sneering, but people ARE getting a chuckle out of the fact that the OP left out the "b" in Hornby.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.
