How are the new 44 tonners?
Posted by sparkingbolt on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 11:00 AM
I havn't seen or heard any feedback on how the new drives in Bachmann Spectrum's 44 tonners perform. Anyone who has any of these care to shed some light?
Thanks, Dan

If you mean the single-drive ones intended to be DCC-ready, I own a couple and find them most satisfactory. Personally I'd prefer to find some of the older two-motor models so I can turn them into power trucks for my interurbans, but since I also run some 44-tonners as 44-tonners the new version is also suitable.

They run very smoothly and their low-speed operation is absolutely superb. They don't have much momentum (due to the lack of a flywheel) but since they are primarily light roadswitchers this is not a problem. They don't go very fast, which is nice because the prototype did not either. The only reason I'm not buying more is because I already have two!

Now I'm just going to collect a bunch of the old 44-tonner and 70-tonner bodies so I can strip their trucks. I will keep the body shells and paint them in various prototypes so I can swap out bodies on my running 44-tonners occasionally--keeps things interesting while providing a cheap supply of traction motors!
