David, Brass models can and often are tempermental beasts. You didn't specify which scale you're working in, this can make a diffenced at times. The best advice I can give, without more info, is to find someone in your area who has expirenece to act as a mentor. By thier very nature of being "hand made", no two models are exactly alike and different manufactures have their preffered way of doing things. Be patient and know that there are ways of recovering from just about any mistake including painting and soldering. John
