Does anyone make RSD12s???
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 5, 2004 6:32 PM
Hi![:)]I want to know if anyone makes RSD-12s anymore as I want to kitbash one to make a Conrail MT-6 slug set. If not a RSD12 does anyone make a RS11 so I can make a MT-4?

Here a couple of links so you can see what a MT6 is.

MT6 's are placed behind SD38s. The MT4 is a 4 axle version of the MT6.

Dougal;

You have several options, depending if you want it powered or not.

I would go with a TVM chassis, and make the shell from two Atlas RS11 shell.
http://www.lynnet.com/~tigervalley/
But you should call Mr Mack, he doesn't do e-mail very well.
For Atlas; "If you would like to place a parts order, please call us at 908-687-0880. You can also fax us at 908-851-2550 or email us at parts@atlasrr.com with your order if your credit card number is on file."

Another choice is the Atlas shell on a lengthend RSD4/5 chassis.

Another; Mehano (Model Power, AHM?) RS11 (look on ebay) and a shortened Mehano (AHM, Model Power, Life Like, IHC) C628 chassis. This one is the least expensive route, and the easiest because the C628 chassis is plastic.

Another would be to stretch the new Mehano (IHC) C415 shell and put it on a shortened C628 chassis.

Stewart C6xx truck on an AS16/616 chassis would be pretty close the right length - if they'll fit.

Or some other combination of the above.

Atlas, Mehano and Tiger Valley have the trucks......

Atlas once offered an Alco RSD12, but the model had major flaws due to being a RS11 shell on a RSD4/5 chassis. These are now rare collectors items.

Wow! I was thinking about doing this exact same thing. It looks like nfmisso has really provided a lot of good info. I'm going to have to get going with this, and I'd love to see how yours turns out. I got a pic of Conrail 1007 working in Frontier yard, NY a while back and then another turned up in GA.

BTW Conrail 1005 is sitting apparently unused at the end of a shorline in Monroe, GA. If their are any close up pictures of this MT-4 I would be happy to get them for you.

Also, have you seen this link about the prototypes?

I've always loved MT4s and 6s (I live near CR's now NS Allentown, Pa yard) so I see them a lot. I always go on that site but I have never seen that page! I'm planning a website that will have a CR slug section I'll post here when it's up(I e-mailed Trainweb a few days ago so it should be up in half a week) so you can get more photo's. I'm a teenager so it will take awile to get started (My goal is to make 3 MT6s for CR/NS and one MT4 for my Allentown Scranton & Northern). www.trainweb.org/crcorp/picshome has many photos of both types of CR slugs also. Good luck on yours!!!

You two might also want to take a look at these articles on modelling slugs:
http://index.mrmag.com/tm.exe?opt=S&cmdtext=slug&MAG=ANY

And purchase the March 1992 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman.

By the way, how are you planning to do the SD38 model?

You may want to snag a RPP SD38 shell before they all disappear.

I'll get two to four SD38's as I model the Reading & Northern also besides my AS&N. I have to get the athearn frame soon since nobody knows whats going to happen to them. I mentioned earlyer that I will also make a MT4 for my AS&N, I'll use a Atlas GP38 for that even though Conrail used GP10s for them. The September 2003 Railroas Model Craftsman has a article on building a CR SD38 from scrach. Thanks for telling me about the RMC nfmisso I heard about it but forgot what date it was.

Well, it looks like I need to get going with this and pick up some shells.

Sorry that I missed this earlier, but I model the NS and CSX post Conrail merger. Right now I don't have much time to model so I mostly just get pictures of any Conrail (and other fallen flag) equipment before it gets repainted.

BTW, come on over to http://www.brrm.net/Trainfan_messages/. I'm a new moderator in the NS section, but their is also a modeling section at the bottom. You'll be sure to get my attention posting over there...[;)]
