"Foamer" -- real definition

I had always thought that when a rairoader called me a "foamer"; he was referring to my tendency to "froth at the mouth", at the sound or sight of a RR locomotive -- especially steam !

How wrong I apparently was !

After 3 or 4 months corresponding with you guys, I realize that it must be the close to total predilection with foam that the rairoaders are laughing at !!

Here we have the dream situation of being able to create the perfect model world -- build the railroad first -- then create fake landscaping over it and around it -- lightweight, removable, hiding for storage tracks etc.

Yet here we are discussing how to replicate land forms using styro foam,
foam insulation, packaging foam blocks etc.

No wonder that they call us "foamers" !!

At the railroad museum where I volunteer, we use the term "foamer" to describe know-it-all types who are there not to listen to what the museum staff have to say, but to tell the museum staff how much they know. To an extent the foamer is tolerated because, frankly, he plunked down his cash, and often they really DO know a lot and it's certainly possible to learn from them, but when one is running a tour group it's often necessary to tactfully defuse one.

Of course, most of the volunteers (including me) are total foamers. But at least we're SUPPOSED to blather on about the trains...
