I have also looked at the Digitrax sound decoders but it appears that the sound files are generic. Any comments on them?

My advice is to pick a brand (from the big 3 probably) and stick with it. As mentioned they all have similar characteristics. I have settled on ESU Loksound V5 decoders. I also purchased the LokProgrammer. This device sets the ESU decoders apart from the others. Yes it is a little spendy but you only need one and the cost is spread across multiple decoders. It gives you extensive versatility. Any of hundreds of sound files can be loaded into a V5 using this device. You can change your mind and reprogram to a different sound file at any time. It allows the decoder firmware to be updated. And if you want you can modify the sound file, even creating your own functions for turning on lights, or sounds or motor behavior. Also, changing CV values is very fast and simple to do. The only drawback is that programming needs to be done on a dedicated piece of track.

Water Level RouteA couple weeks ago I installed an Econami in a Genesis F3, and not only does it sound great, I was shocked at the out of the box slow speed control. It's comparable to my Proto F3's with ESU decoders.

If you stick with any of the three most popular brands (ESU (Loksound), TCS (WOW-Sound), Soundtraxx (Tsunami/Econami)), you should be happy. Soundtraxx used to get a bad rap for their diesel sounds and less than great slow speed control. A couple weeks ago I installed an Econami in a Genesis F3, and not only does it sound great, I was shocked at the out of the box slow speed control. Given that I'm a big fan of motor-control, I would opt for either Loksound or TCS Wow! And, yes - a sound install will be a bit of a challenge with the S3 but the Loksound 5 micro and the curved cab speaker might just do the trick for you.
I've had good luck with TCS decoders ( sound and non sound ) in my P2K's and have found their online instruction pictures very helpful.
I have a P2K S3, P2K FA2-FB2 and a P1K RS10 that I would like to get sound decoders for and wondering which decoders would be the best ones in terms of ease of installation and sound options/quality.
