BigDaddy- where do I find the preferences for USB ?

I'm a member of NCE groups.io.   One of the guys there, David Heap, is a guru with NCE, ESU and JMRI.

If your JMRI doesn't report the numbers I listed above, he asks people to post an error log.  I don't want to serve as an intermediary with another forum, just join it and ask about your problem.

I'm probably the last person to offer "expertise " but I had a similar problem with my Digitrax PR3. I realize you're using NCE but maybe this is a similar problem. My fix was to download updated firmware to the PR3 and it has now worked perfectly for a couple of years now.

Well I spoke too soon- the bottom line stayed green/then I tried to read the decoder- CV 8.  It must of timed out? Green line went red.

I am so frustrated now I don't know WHAT to do?
This is suppose to be almost a plug and play but after three days fussing with it I am still unable to program a loco with JMRI.

I have looked at several U-tube video's and each one has something different to say- really confusing.

Sorry I can't help with your issue, I am NOT an expert.

I have watched a lot of YouTube videos on all kinds of things related to house work, and the contradictions, bad advice, and nonsense get annoying. I feel your frustration there.

I finally found a couple of Canadian Home Rennovation YouTubers that seem to have their acts together, and I only watch those guys.

I don't use JMRI but this is the usual advice from the NCE Groups.io

Please disconnect any extra cabs etc. and go back to the following diagnostic-friendly settings:

The best beginner-level/diagnostic settings for a Power Cab (any version) and an NCE USB (any version) are:
- All USB Jumpers off (or at least 2, 3 & 4. Jumper 1 is ignored).
- JMRI preferences are:
- System manufacturer: NCE
- System connection: NCE USB
- Serial port: (The COM port number you saw appearing/disappearing)
- USB Version: V7.x.x
- System: PowerCab
- Additional Connection Settings checkbox ON
- Baud rate: 9600.

The JMRI system console log should then report V6.3.0 or V7.3.0.

Tom, I tried your tip- I got the same results. What I did do was to change the jumpers on the USB adaptor. This had been set to a baud rate of 9600, I changed that to19200 baud rate- It is now working- Thanks again for your help

Thanks Tom- I will give that a try. Just a FYI I am doing a complete new  install a a different computer- I followed a video by Larry Pucket on U-Tube. I could not get the driver to install at first-finely got that done. After fighting other things I try to open decoder pro- I get to the first pop up which is profile set- I can not get past this point . You have three options here/ add existing, new and OK. I have been trying to set this to a name-cabbus in new profile-I get an err- If I use set active profile and click OK. It brings up the start page for programming- but the bottom line only stayed on for 5 or 10 seconds then goes red.

that is where I am to this point- going to try your tips now- thanks for your input.

woodone,

Try this:

  • Unplug the USB cable from your computer, disconnect power to the USB module, and disconnect your Power Cab from the PCP panel
  • Exit Decoder Pro
  • Plug everything back in in the same order - i.e. USB cable, power to USB module, and Power Cab into PCP panel
  • Re-start Decoder Pro

I had to do that earlier today when I was getting the red status messages at the bottom and it fixed it.

To tell the truth I really need some one to hold my hand (LOL)

I have looked at several U-tube video's and each one has something different to say- really confusing. Unless someone is willing to do a phone call it would take days on the forum. PM me if you are interested. Thanks in advance!

Well I could open the Programer but when I tried to ID the decoder it. Would not do that. It timed out overand over.

I would see the red line after timed out.

I,am starting from scratch, so I am using a New USB interface and a new JMRI. I doing this on a different computer. And the latest JMRI version.

What do you mean by "quit working"?  Are you getting the red "Service Mode Programmer NCE Online" & "Operations Mode Programmer NCE Online" at the bottom of the screen?

Also, which version of JMRI are you using?  The current one is V4.22.
