Hello everyone again, I have a Bachmann HO sound value Alco 2-6-0 (not the ez app one). The wire came out of the plug that plugs into the back of the locomotive (the tether). I got a new wire tether from Bachmann, but like a dummy I forgot to label the wires from the tether to their proper location on the soundtraxx decoder. I called Bachmann and they were supposed to call me and write me back with the pin out information. They have not. I do not suppose anyone in the community knows the pin outs for the tether or the plug in the back of the locomotive. It is an 8 pin wire tether. I need to know which wires are for the left track right track Motor positive Motor negative and so on and so forth so I can reattach them to the soundtraxx factory decoder board. Thanks.

From what you are describing it sounds like Bachmann has a new connection now.

All my steamers have a two pin and four pin connection. One time I had to use my multimeter and do a ohm's check under a similiar issue. The Bachmann forums could not answer me at the time. The wires were not colored. The diagrams do not show wiring at the Bachmann site. I have belonged for some years.

I just looked at the plug and it seems to be all black wires from what I can see which means trouble shooting or waiting for the center to call. Good luck.

 Track and motor wires are easy enough to figure out with a meter set on continuity. That gets you 4 of the wires in the connector. 2 more for the headlight, and that's a 50/50 if it's an LED. Nothing will happen if you hook it up backwards. I have no idea what 2 MORE pins in the harness would be. There's no reason for the rear light connection to go up into the loco, and it would be a first if the speaker is in the loco instead of in the tender. Is it an 8 pin harness or 6?

Where they attach on the decoder though - the only information on the Soundtraxx site for the OEM decoder is the list of supported CVs and what they do. No wiring diagram provided. A close look at the board may reveal the answer though, usually the connection points are labelled.

Yes, it's very small print but the connection points on the lightboard are labelled.

Yes you are correct. I am familar with the 2 pin 4 pin set up. This is different, as you can see in the picture I just posted the tether is single color black. I need to know the pin outs for the wires or the connector in the back of the locomotive. The board is straight forward and pretty easy. It even has solderless connections you just hook up the wires and slide on the solderless terminal covers.

There is no picture, not even a placeholder for one.  (See the 'sticky' if necessary about the arcane way you have to present images to appear in posts)

How is this situation different from the guy back in December who broke two of his six-connector leads off an engine-tender harness?  As I recall that thread involved some very careful wire tracing, which might benefit at least the analysis of this situation.

A piece of advice given in that thread -- to color-code or label the wires both sides of the connector, preferably with little spots of NMRA-compatible color -- is a really, really recommended idea as the OP traces out what he has.
