Anthony - Welcome to the forums.

If you still have the box, does it mention on the end panel anything about DCC/Sound Equiped, or say Tsunami 2?

If not, it simply does not have a decoder installed.

If it does say that, sounds like the decoder was not put in properly at the factory, and I would return to either Athearn or place of purchase under warranty.

Anthony,

Does it make a buzzing sound?  If so, then it's most likely DC and needs a decoder.

Do you still have the original box that your locomotive came in?  The end panel should tell you whether it's DC or DCC.

when i run it with my NCE Powercab It says short circut detected when i tried programing it and it was making a noice when i put it on the track any help?

Anthony,

Just for clarification: If your PowerCab detects a short it will cycle power off & on until the short is cleared - e.g. removing the locomotive from the track.  Is that what is happening?

Welcome to the forum, your posts are delayed in moderation for the first few.

Since you just got it, take it back or see if Athearn will fix it under warranty.  It could be a lose wire, a defective decoder but once you start monkeying with it, no one will cover the warranty.

Thanks to everyone. I called Soundtraxx today. They sent a complaint form. If less than 90 days old then they will replace no problems. Very easy to work with.

if you have a copy of the receipt where you bought it and its been less than a year Soundtraxx will replace it for cost of shipping it to them. make sure to get a RMA number from them before sending it in.

I installed a Soundtraxx decoder.  It didn't work, but they were happy to replace it.  I give Soundtraxx high marks for customer service.

I have to assume this a lightboard decoder board and not a shrink wrapped decoder.

My NCE Power Cab on the program track has protected me once.

Did you try a complete decoder reset?

I use double sided foam tape for mounting or a styrene board for the decoder board. Depends on the loco.

Electrical tape is too messy.

Kapton tape is thin and strong and comes from DCC companies.

Please forgive me if this has been talked about before .

I recently installed a new tsunami 2 sound decoder in an Atlas gp38

As soon as I cranked up the power cab it read “short circuit detected. I tried another locomotive and it worked fine so I’m thinking the track is fine. Then I put the decoder in another loco and got nothing.

Im thinking I didn’t put electrical tape between the decoder and the motor. Hopefully Soundtrax will send another decoder without many problems. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
