Has anyone installed a decoder in a HO scale Athearn EMD-40 switcher. I would like to know what type of decoder to use.The loco has a 8 pin plug & dcc ready.I was thinking a N scale micro might fit, but i need to know what brand of decoder might work best and fit properly, and maybe a sound decoder could be used if i add a tag along rolling stock car, with the wires and a plug in the rolling stock car with a speaker installed.

I searched for this loco. one site says the two diodes for directional lighting or in backwards and could smoke a decoder. Saw it at the TCS decoder site.
Another forum discussion mentions this also.
The link included before says nothing about this so maybe Athearn improved them.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
It was definitely a problem on the original release as a Roundhouse product. Some older install instructions mention this. Maybe it was fixed for the Athearn run - it would pay to check, just to keep from frying the function outputs on the decoder. Compare an older install that specifically says Roundhouse with the appearance of the board in the newer one.

Could the decoder and a sugar cube speaker fit in the cab?

Would be a challenge. But if sound can go in a Grandt Line 23 tonner without a trailing 'speaker car' then it should work in this which is almost huge by comparison. i have a Walthers Plymouth and I plan to put sound in one of these days - should be a real adventure, that's even smaller than the Model 40.
