Hello friends,
At the MRR show last weekend I picked up a Proto-1000 RDC-2. (Always wanted one, finally broke down.)
All of my motive power is DCC with sound. I've done sound installs in other locos and had lots of success with Tsunami decoders. My web research has revealed that for the RDC I'm looking at either a QSI or Digitrax decoder with a downloaded sound package.
My questions for the assembled experts are:
1. What experience has anyone had with either the QSI or Digitrax decoders loaded with RDC sound projects?
2. What tips can anyone offer for installing a sound decoder into this device? (mounting, lighting, speaker, etc.)
Thank you in advance for your replies.

Dwayne:
Thanks for posting. I have exactly the same project on my to do list. I will be following this thread intently.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Will this help any;; http://www.bevteccom.co.uk/Rail/DCC/P1k_RDC.html
Hope it works,

Rats,,,,,The link is fine,,,but,,it is not for a sound install,,,sorry,,,,should have looked at the whole article..
Cheers,
Hi,
I've use more or less the same set-up. Only all I did cut the braiding on three RDCs, using 2 Tsunami 750's, thses tend to get a bit hot so they were attached with doule sided foam. The 3rd has a Tsunami 1000 (all railcar), all are fitted with Zimo sugar lump spaekers, there's more than enough room under the center hump to fit everything.
Be in touch.
pick.
Hi Mr. Pick,
Hey, I must be stunned and missing something. I cannot find reference to a Tsunami decoder for RDC (or railcar?). More detailed specifications please.
[edit] Okay I did find the Tsunami Galloping Goose decoder. I assume this is what you are referring to.
All others - does anyone have experience with the QSI or Digitrax decoders and can comment on their sound quality and ease of installation.
[edit] Can anyone comment on the sound difference between QSI RDC, Digitrax RDC & Tsunami Galloping Goose. Is there a difference in the sounds of these prototypes?
Cheers. D
There is a big difference between a Galloping Goose and an RDC. The Geese were passenger car based, with mechanical trnasmissions. Depending on which Goose, would actually make a difference which car brand engine was in it, but they'd all be pretty close. The RDC has a pair od Detroit Diesel bus engines with hydraulic transmissions.
If the Digitrax one is one of their original sound projects, it will be rather muddy and indistinct. If it's one that one of the wizards from the Digitraxsound Yahoo group created, it will be pretty decent. The QSI one will be better, but QSi doesn;t have a small decoder - so you would be obscuring the interior somewhat. For a tiny decoder, the Loksound Micros are smaller than the TSU-750 and also have no heat issues, unfortunately they do not currently have an RDC sound set. They do have some European diesel-hydraulic loco sounds that would be close. It probably wouldn;t have the right horns - however with e V4.0 Micro that can be fixed with a Lokprogrammer. Several of us here could make that swap for you, the diesel-hydraulic prime mover with a proper US horn for whatever particular protoype you are modeling.

Side note - holy cow, they have a sound file for that crazy experimental loco that had a pair of airplane engines and propellers! And a VW 'Bus' made into a hi-rail vehicle.

Thanks for the info Randy,
I think I will survey the RDC for possible QSI installation. If I find I cannot fit the QSI I may be looking for some other alternative.
My first choice is to not have to buy additional programming equipment to work with this one-off decoder. I can buy the QSI loaded with RDC sounds from Tony's Train Exchange. If I need to work with another decoder and 'custom load' a sound project I will be searching for help from somebody with the correct equipment and experience.
For now I will work on Plan A. Thanks for your assistance to get here. I will post more as I investigate and learn.
