Some of the newer uploads to the Sound Depot are the results of some of the wizards from the Digitraxsound Yahoo group, and they've been able to coax amazing things out of those cheap decoders.

Do what Randy suggests.  The sound decoder comes with the memory partitioned for two separate sounds.  The 1st partition has the generic steam sound, and the second partition has the SD38-2 diesel sound.  When I installed my decoder in a Kato SD40-2, I selected the SD38-2 sound to verify everything was working, then down-loaded the SD40-2 sound into the decoder.  As you found, there was NO sound when I tested.  Changing the CV to the 'steam' sound was the fix.  If I have left  the CV set to the 'steam' sound, I would not have had this issue.  When you download a new decoder sound file, the memory partitions are erased, and an all new boot/sound file is installed.  Setting the CV to point to a now non-existant  file location results in no sound!  I have 3 Kato 'mid production' SD40-2's that use this decoder with the SD40-2 sound files installed.  The turbo whine as you notch up is quite good for a sound decoder that only cost me about $40 !

Check CV61. If it's 1, set it to 0, if it's 0, set it to 1. This is what selects between steam or diesel in multiple sound projects, like the default one that comes in the decoder. If you have CV61=1 so it played the diesl (SD38) sounds prior to loading the proper sound project, then you need to set it to 0, since the much better newer and specific projects have only one set of sounds in them.

Posted by raptorengineer on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 5:27 PM

hi

ok I have few engines that have sdh164d decoder in them and I have install them right. now I also got the digitrax pr3 decoder programmer and I try to put right sounds in the engines like I have 2 sd70ace from athern. now once I have everything hook up and install I downloaded sd70ace sound from digitrax site and using that sound loader program I import the sound in the decoder. and it gose well like the tranfering to decoder gose with out problems. but when I tested it out there no sound. i can turn on lights and stuff but no sound. i try different start buttons like f5 or f6 or f12 but nothing so i reset the decoder to factory settings and i get the sounds back that came with decoder. has anyone had this issue. also i know pr3 didn't come with dc power suppy so i found one with right voltage and stuff. i donno if that could be issue.
