I think the manual will explain it much better than I can. If you have a DCS50 look sections 18.0 to 18,3 inclusive, starting at page 26. If you own a DCS51 it is the same sections but starting on page 32

I am fairly new to DCC and it took some practice but I got the hang of it after doing it several times.  Follow the manual carefully, the steps are pretty clear.  One detail that I didn't get until my dealer explained it was how to get "back to back" operations (like two GP9s coupled tail-to-tail).  When you select the unit to be added to the consist the "Forward-Brake-Reverse" lever needs to be set for reverse.  Then the second unit will follow the first in the correct direction.

This a very good observation binder001.

No such thing as "Normal" consisting or "Command Station Consisting". At least not by those two terms.

There is "Basic" consisting which is giving each engine the same address.

There is "Universal" consisting which is handled by the command station. Digitrax systems use universal consisting by default. The instructions in the manual and referred to already are for universal consisting. They work.

there is also "Advanced consisting" This method gives each consist a unique short address between 01 and 127. That consist address is programmed into CV19 of each decoder. When CV19's value is any6 number than 00, the decoder will only respond to speed and direction commands sent to the address in CV19. Change CV19 back to 00 and it will no longer be in consist. All of this is remembered by the decoder so advance consisting is sometimes referred to as decoder assisted consisting.
