Insulating the frogs
Posted by dominic c on Monday, May 13, 2013 10:21 AM

Hello Fellow MR'S

I want to wire the frogs.

I have Tortoise slow mo with Shinohara insulfrog turn outs. I saw a you tube video showing a guy wiring them up. I just want to make sure and a few questions.

Positions 1&8 on the Tortoise from the bus to wire the tortoise machine?

Positions 2&3 on the Tortoise from the bus to wire the frogs?

Position 4 to the frog itself?

Are these 3 questions right?

Now, I have a black and yellow feeders from the bus. Which feeder goes to 2 and which to 3?

Dominic:

Positions 1 and 8 are for 9 to 12 volts DC. You don't connect them to the DCC bus. Positions 2 and 3 go to your DCC bus wires and position 4 to the frog. The feeders from your DCC bus should be connected so that the frog is connected to the proper rail when the turnout is thrown to that position. For example looking from the points end of the turnout, the right rail feeder should be connected to the frog when the turnout is in the straight through position. When it is thrown to the diverging position the left rail feeder should be connected to the frog.

Consider a 5 section terminal block under the table near the tortoise & frog. Then if you get the frog polarity wrong just swap the feeder connections at the terminal block.
