Walthers 90 ft DCC Turntable
Posted by JohnL on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 8:53 PM

I recently splurged on one of the new Walthers DCC turntables.   Easily wired and programmed, i ithought it would work perfectly.  Unfortunately when i try to run a loco omto it, i get the electricsl short signal from my digitrax system and the loco shuts down.   Once on the TT the engine comes back on and runs normally until it gets to the edge of the TT where it shorts again to the main.  It almost seems like the thing needs an Auto-reverser but ive heard that this TT already comes with one.  I did wire the four leads as instructed for DCC (2 outside to one bus wire, 2 inside to the other bus wire), but am otherwise using the provided comtroller to run the TT.  Is this where i went wrong?   Anyone else ever experience this shorting problem?

JOHNL,

I'm not trying to put you off, or anything like that, but you can find tons of info, about what you are experiencing with your turntable, that has already been discussed many times.. Go to the search community, right side of your screen, type in Walthers 90ft DCC turntable,,, and be ready to read on,,, tons of advice... What you are experiencing is the bridge is not positioned correctly with the no track,zones.......

Cheers,

Frank

Frank is correct.

Read through the following thread and see if that helps with your problem.

I just went though this same thing, when I recently installed my 130 ft DCC turntable. You need to swap the lead wires from your DCC bus.

Michael, so you are saying that the wires simply need to be reversed and that it is not the position of the bridge track?

Same thing occurred with me. Swapping the wires fixed the problem.

Yes, Rich, because the bridge needs to match itself with what is on either end of it.  If you have the bridge leads crossed in relation to the lead and radials, you get the short when the gap is bridged, and that short will be duplicated when you swap ends on the bridge.

Guys,

Great inputs.  Switching the bus wires solved the problem.   The TT now works perfectly.  Thanks.

Being a newby to this (whose shorts are definitely too tight), i really appreciate the advice.

I did find eventually find a Youtube video from Heljan who i think is the true manufacturer and interestingly their instructions - both written and verbal - show the bus wires connected to terminals 1-3 and 2-4 while the DCC setup figure in the Walther's instructions shows 1-4 and 2-3.   Walthers may have an error in at least the version of the instructions that came with my HO 90'.

With the 90' DCC turntable there are two sets of instructions.

First set is 8 pages long and is titled "MODERN TURNTABLE WITH DCC CONTROL BOX MANUAL"

and the second set is titled "MODERN TURNTABLE WITH DCC INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS"

The second set deals with DCC and DC wiring options for the control box.

Walthers has not posted the 2nd set of insturctions, I noitifed Walthers and they said they would update their support page, but that does not seem do be the case.
