I acquired a new locomotive with sound that has no documentation. How do I find out the make and model of a decoder in order to research finding out the programming CV's? thanks
It would be helpful to know the make, type and scale of the loco. Any additional information you have on it will probably help too.

The manufacturer ID is found in CV8. The version number is CV7. That's a number the manufacturer defines. All of the NMRA specs for DCC are found here:

Unfortunately, decoding CV7 doesn't seem to be as simple as a table lookup that I could find.

CV8 is the manufacture code CV7 is the software version of the decoder. The version number usually does not affect CV settings but will give you an idea how old the decoder is. Most CVs will remain the same for all versions of software.
