Want to extend throttle tether / cable
Posted by basementdweller on Sunday, February 24, 2013 10:33 PM

I have a Lenz set 100, the throttle is connected to the command station with a 5 pin DIN connector. I would like to extend the throttle tether. Can I get a length of DIN cable with a 5 pin male connector on one end and a 5 pin DIN socket (female connector) on the other?

I really do not want to install ports around the layout and I thought that 5' or 6' or so of of additional throttle tether would be ideal. Is it this simple or am I missing something?

I went to Radio Shack today and they said they do not have DIN cable, they really have become just another cell phone store, what a shame.

Thanks for any help.

You might want to contact Tony's Trains and ask him, here's the web page http://www.tonystrains.com/products/lenz_comp.htm Jim.

I believe the Lenz manual has all the pin assignments you need, in case you can't actually buy a ready-made cable.  I have bought male and female connectors.  Lenz only uses 4 of the 5 pins, so 4-conductor (2-pair) telephone wire is sufficient.  I bought my connectors from Ocean State Electronics, but I just looked them up and discovered a corporate obituary.

There are 2 flavors of 5-pin DIN connectors.  Lenz uses the ones with 45-degree spacing.  (The others are 60-degree spacing, I believe.)  If the place where you buy them doesn't make it perfectly clear on their web site, you may need to call to get the right one.

As another option, though, you might want to reconsider putting a few jacks around your layout and wiring them all up.  The jacks are cheap, and phone wire is, too.  I think it's a better plan than having very long throttle cords, and it gives you the option to add additional throttles later on.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Try Digikey, I got a 14ft coiled cord for my Prodigy Sq throttle from them for under $20 including shipping.
