You are going to have to be more specific:

  • Is this a HO or N scale Kato engine?
  • What model MRC sound decoder?

MRC has a 'drop in' N scale decoder for that engine(MRC N Kato SD80 drop in 0001808).  And if you have a HO engine, there should be lots of room for a speaker mount.  Sometimes the 'supplied' speaker needs to be replaced..  I have had to use a small oval Tonys Dream Speaker to fit in the long hood under the radiator area of some engines(HO).

I assume this is an HO model, and the decoder came with a 1" round speaker?? Unless the model has an opening for a 1" speaker (like say a Kato SD-38), generally the largest speaker w/ enclosure you can fit in a GP or SD type engine is a 1/2" x 1" oval speaker. If you get a good speaker and enclosure, the sound is usually very good from such a speaker.
