You are probably using Universal consisting. You should be able to call up the rear loco address(which will show it consisted) and turn the lights on and off--at least we can.

I think it depends on what DCC system that you have.
I have NCE and when I select my consists using the rear loco's address, the consist runs as normal but the lights and horn work on the rear loco. When I select the consist using the front locos address, the front loco bell and horn is used.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.
(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.
I think it would depend on what brand of sound decoders are you using? I just started using Tsunami's last month, so I am not totally up to speed with them yet. It appears that CV 22 can do what you want, but again I am not sure and only have 1 Tsunami equipped loco at the moment so I cannot test this theory.

It depends on how you are MU-ing them.
If you set up an advanced consist then setting CVs 21 and 22 to a value given in the decoder manufacture manual to allow functions while consisted.
If you are using the command station to double head, universal, or old fashion consist then the command station is in control of the locos and most functions will not work when the loco is not selected/ addressed.

I pray every day I break even, Cause I can really use the money!
I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
I have a number of locos with sound. I like to MU a consist of two or three together on freight trains. When I set up an MU, the address loco has all the functions. The MUd locos just have motor control and engine sounds. The other functions do not work on the MUd locos. It appears this is proper, to eliminate two or three horns and bells, etc. My question is this. When I run the consist backwards, maybe as light power, the headlight does not operate on the MUd loco, even when the MUd loco is running in a forward direction. Is there a CV or any way that the headlight can operate on an MUd loco, when it is running in a forward direction?
