I seem to be having a problem with my K-Line J1e. I finally took apart the loco to get to the smoke unit yesterday and apparently fixed it. I had the loco puffing like crazy! the resistors(element) was getting hot and glowing. I then put the body back on the frame and now it goes on for 3 seconds, smoke pours out of it then it shuts down, The smoke unit is all metal with a plunger underneath to puff the smoke. Does the smoke unit need to be insulated from touching the body when it is installed? I saw a black wire that runs from under the motor then up to the resistor that has the wick material around it. The wire at the other end of the resistor then comes out through the metal lid that sits atop the smoke unit and grounds itself to the housing of the unit. Is this correct? maybe the resistors are wrong? I purchased a Lionel smoke resistor at a show Sunday, it didn't seem to work but maybe it wasn't making good contact. I did take a reading from both resistors. The Lionel was like 027... and the original was around 047. I used a MRC 6200 and a MTH Z-1000 to power the loco. The J1e shuts down with the 6200 and the fuse on the side of the power supply on the Z-1000 trips. Seems to be a cut and dry situation and I hope someone can help with some advice. (She was bought used and I have no owners manual or schematics)
