I have an Athearn Genesis GP7. It did not come with factory installed sound.
I'd like to add a Tsunami sound decoder for this loco.
I'm guessing the GN1000 might work. However the Soundtraxx website does not list the Athearn Genesis GP7 on their decoder selector page. I know the GN1000 was mainly developed for the Genesis F units. So I'm wondering if this decoder will fit in the smaller hood of a GP7.
Any ideas which Tsunami decoder will fit in a Genesis GP7?

It will fit inside the GP7 hood. The hard part is finding room for the speaker. I'm not familliar with the innards on the Athearn units. There might be a place for a speaker milled out some where. One thing to consider is the clearence between where the decoder mounts and the top of the hood inside. On a GP7 this should not be a problem. This decoder replaces the PC board that comes with the loco. Joe.
This is made for first generation EMD locos with 567 prime mover, which is your GP7 among others.

I have milled/drilled out the fuel tanks on my genesis sd70s for a1.1" round speaker, maybe you can do that for this unit. The biggest speaker with decent enclosure is a big difference. I have put a medium oval speaker in my genesis switcher. In this case I used the body shell as four sides of the enclosure and thick cardboard for the end--the speaker itself is the 6th--this approach allows the use of the biggest speaker. I did have to file down the speaker and loco body shell sides a little.

Appreciate the info Joe and Richard.
Thanks.
Doing a little searching, some use the 16mm x 35mm oval speaker.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
You're going to like the TSU decoder. I installed one inside an Athearn SW1500. Mt is for the Great Northern that has a flashing light on top of the cab. I wired the bulb to the F5 out put on the decoder. It's great watching the light flash! Have fun !!! Joe.

I love Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders.
I've installed 8 of them (TSU-GN1000 EMD 567) into my two ABBA F unit lashups. One a Santa Fe passenger F3 ABBA (32LABC), and the other a Santa Fe freight F7 ABBA (217LABC). Very impressive sound and other nice features. i like the mars light on the passenger Fs, and the ability to choose from multiple horns that are close to the prototype.
I suppose I could have checked the sizing with these GN-1000 decoders, but I didn't really want to open up the F units if I didn't have to.
My other loco, a Bachmann Alco S4, came with a Soundtraxx decoder installed. Kind of Tsunami light. Not all the bells and whistles (literally ) as the standard Tsunami decoder, but still nice.
