First, for the type of work you are going to do (replacing the bulbs) I suggest that you get a good set of digital calipers. They will allow you to take accurate measurements for selecting replacement items, as well as being an excellent tool for your other modeling.

For replacement wire, you could use magnet wire (copper wire coated with varnish) or wire-wrap wire. Wire-wrap wire is usually AWG30. The magnet wire comes in different sizes. Both should be available at any good electronics parts supply store. (Note – Radio Shack is not a good electronics parts supply store.)

I would replace the bulbs with LEDs.

For both operations you will need to know how to solder really well.

Elmer.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.

(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.

Rewiring Model Power Signals for N-Guage
Posted by MikeH on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 11:34 AM

I have some Model Power n-guage signals that are in need of replacement bulbs.  They are originally supplied with incandescent bulbs.  I have tried to replace them but the incandescent bulbs I have have leads that are too thick to thread through the post.

Does anyone have a good technique to replace these bulbs and successfully thread the wires through the post?

Are there replacement bulbs that come with thinner leads so they can be successfully threaded through the post?

Or, is there wire available that is thinner that can be used?

I also would not mind replacing the bulbs with LEDs.   Any suggestions on where to get appropriately sized LEDs?

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!
