I've got a number of each brand of decoder, and there's no question that the Soundtraxx is by far the better decoder.  There's a reason for the price difference.

Digitrax uses 8-bit sound encoding, while Souuntraxx uses 16-bit encoding.  I don't consider myself much of an audiophile, but even to my untrained ears the Soundtraxx engines knock the socks off the others.

You get what you pay for. I have only experience with N scale sound. Soundtraxx makes the better product.

There is really no comparison, the Digitrax has poorer sound quality and does not handle LED's well at all.  I just installed one in an SD70ACE and wish I had spent the extra and got a better decoder.  I don't plan on getting any more of the Digitrax sound decoders.

Soundtrax vs. digitrax
Posted by jerryl on Saturday, May 12, 2012 9:28 AM

I want to put a sound decoder in an HO model of the Blue Comet engine i made from a new mantua pacific & was wondering how the digitrax sound compares to the Soundtrax.  Not much experience with sound & am leaning toward the Digitrax because of price.  Any suggestions?    Thanks.
