rrinker Is the whole assembly removeable? It is probably just a glue similar to Elmer's, that will soften is made wet. Athearn glues theire light bulbs in with a similar stuff and it is possible to pop them out without breaking the bulb. Under pressure it seems to just break free of the plastic. --Randy

Randy,
This one's for you!
I started by applying water to the adhesive with a QTIP. Not much happened.
Tried rubbing alcohol on a QTIP. Nothing.
So, I separated the tender from the engine and litterally dunked the mast and bulb in a small cup of water and held it there for about 20 seconds. When I took it out of the water and set the tender on the work bench, I grasped the bulb between my fingers and pulled it right out, intact.
Thank you, sir.

Good question. I need to run down to the layout and look at it. If I recall correctly, it does seem that the plastic mast holding the bulb is removable. I do recall that it appears to slide into place. Before attempting to remove the mast, I will apply some water or alcohol to the spot of glue to see if it softens.
I don't care if I break the bulb because it is burned out anyhow, but I don't want to break the plastic mast by applying unnecessary pressure.
locoi1sa Rich. My P2K 2-8-8-2 rear light is an LED mounted the same way. I am sure working with a sharp hobby knife will cut the stuff and then drilling out the wiring with a pin vise will allow you to replace it. Pete

Pete, thanks for that advice. It is pretty much along the lines of what I have considered doing to remove the bulb.
I am hoping that someone else has confronted this issue and found a way to soften that glue/epoxy/putty to easily remove the bulb. In the owner's manual that is included with the loco, Proto mentions the possible need to replace the bulb, so it would seem that the manufacturer did not intend to make the installation permanent and irreversible.
I pray every day I break even, Cause I can really use the money!
I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
The rear headlight on the Proto Heritage NKP/PM 2-8-4 is mounted on a plastic mast, and the bulb is fastened with some kind of white epoxy or hardened glue of some type.
Can anyone tell me how to soften or remove that white adhesive so that I can replace the bulb?
