Thanks. I was leaning in that direction. It's one of those oddball issues. It used to work normally, and just recently changed. I know all about the MRCs now. But I bought it several years ago. Got sucked in by the low price.

You might try a reset to factory settings and try it on address 3. If the lights still act the same a new decoder is needed.

Strange Decoder Problem.
Posted by hobo9941 on Sunday, February 5, 2012 12:50 PM

The decoder is an MRC, purchased before I was aware of all the MRC problems. Decoder is installed in an Athearn D-9, ready to run. Power is a Zephyr system. Motor control is OK. Sounds are OK.

The problem: When I put it in forward, and press FO, the headlight comes on at normal brightness. As I open the throttle, the engine begins to move, and the headlight begins to dim, going all the way out at speed. Further confusing the issue, when I put it in reverse, the backup light is barely visible, but gets brighter as I open the throttle. Why would the lights get dimmer going forward, and brighter backing up? I'm just wondering if any CVs might be involved. Given that it's an MRC, maybe I should be grateful the motor and sounds are OK. But it would be nice to have the lights work properly. Thanks for any help or clues.
