Here's a solution for the sound:
1. Buy a Loksound V3.5 decoder and suitably sized 100 ohm speaker.
2. Go to the loksound yahoo site and download my P42 Sound Project. In it there is a correct K5LA chime, bell and engine sound, complete with "whoop" compressor sound.
The bell and compressor sounds are from actual P42 recordings provided by another enthusiast on the DCC-Sound group (forget the name, but I can find it if need be) which I carefully edited and looped.
You will need the use of a Loksound programmer to install the file. If you don't know anyone with one, email me and I may be able to help. Tony's Trains can do it if you tell them where the file is and buy the decoder from them.
I can't advise about the ditch lights. I seem to remember reading that the 3.5 can do them, but please check into this yourself if it is a requirement.

Seeking input on adding a DCC sound capable decoder to the new Athern Amtrak Phase V P42 loco. Primary criteria for the install will be:1. Correct horn sound2. Correct engine sound3. Capable of adding ditch lights in addition to the front and rear lightsWhat would be my best choice for decoder manufacturer and part number?
Has anyone added sound to one of these and installed the additional ditch lights that Athern did not provide?
Thank you
Walt
