The NCE D13 will run a 12v. bulb. Or you can solder an smd 1k resistor to the correct pad on the back and run an LED without using a 1/4 watt resistor in line. There are 4 sets of surface mount solder pads on the back for the headlight/rear light and accessory lighting. (a really nice feature)
They do? NCE page doesn't mention that feature. Anyway the bulbs in the P2K S1 are 3V. And I don't like bulbs . If I'm going to put resistors in then I might as well use LEDs so I never have to mess with it again. You're not thinkign of the NCE SW9-SR for the P2K SW's, are you? That one has pads for a resistor so you don't have to change the nearly impossible to access rear light bulb in that one.
Only reason I crammed a Digitrax DH163L0 in mine was to prove it could be done. Of course that didn't require bulb changes, but I did have to file down the frame a bit to get it all to fit. I wouldn't do that again.
Oh yeah, don't forget to fix the orange wire.

Just curious - what have you got against Digitrax?
Are you interested in sound? A couple of months back someone did a photo-essay on installing a sound decoder in this engine. I'm thinking about upgrading mine to sound. It's quiet. Too quiet.
The engine has one of those silly plastic "light pipes" to route the cab-end headlight beam from where they put it (inside the hood, in front of the cab) to the back of the cab. I really don't understand why they did this, unless they were worried about the incandescent bulb melting the plastic around the opening in the cab. When I did mine, I removed both the original light and the light pipe and mounted a golden-white LED right above the cab, where it belongs. This lets me see what the crew is doing at night. The original bulb? If you looked at it straight on, you could tell there was a light, but it provided no illumination at all.
